Morning Line: Support Others
A life lesson received from a father. When he returned from a trip to Africa, he said he saw a wounded elephant. He watched as the herd of elephants circled around their hurting and weak friend and held him up. They instinctively knew that if he fell, he would never be able to get back up. They stayed and supported him until he was strong enough to stand alone. Her dad told her we all get wounded sooner or later and we all need elephants to hold us up.
Galatians 6:2 says we are to bear one another’s burdens, and Galatians 6:5 says we are to bear our own burdens. Contradiction? Never. The Bible is totally consistent and always true. 6:5 is emphasizing that in the ordinary days of life we are to carry our own load. We are not to shirk responsibility, mooch off of others, and pass our personal duties off to someone else due to laziness or entitlement.
Galatians 6:2 addresses times in life when a crisis or trial becomes too heavy for a person to carry alone – sudden tragedies (like the death of a spouse, a severe medical diagnosis, or financial ruin) or being severely weighed down by a struggle with sin and temptation. Christians are commanded to come alongside one another to help lift these crushing weights, fulfilling “the law of Christ”.
It is like the Scriptures are saying we are to carry our own backpacks. But there will be crushing times in life when our backpacks will be too heavy to shoulder alone, so we humbly allow others to help.
Let’s learn from the elephants and, more importantly, from the Word of God.
Bear one another’s burdens when times are overwhelming.
