Some Great Thoughts to Ponder:

Dependence or Independence I’ve been meditating on some quotes and verses about dependence on God …

Jim Denison states: “America’s theological creed could be, ‘God helps those who help themselves.’ More than 80 percent of Americans believe the phrase is in the Bible, and three-fourths of those surveyed agree with its sentiment.

Theologian Dean Ulrich counters this sentiment, ‘God does not help those who help themselves. Rather, he helps those who cannot help themselves, know it, and rely on him.’”

A. W. Pink notes, “The great mistake made by most of the Lord’s people is in hoping to discover in themselves that which is to be found in Christ alone.”

Bill Bright adds, “The Christian life isn’t difficult, it’s impossible—without the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Abraham Lincoln observed: “It is the duty of nations as well as of men, to own their dependence upon the overruling power of God . . . and to recognize the sublime truth, announced in the Holy Scriptures and proven by all history, that those nations only are blessed whose God is the Lord.”

How does this dependence work in our spiritual life? Who is responsible for our growth? I think people tend to take one of three approaches:

1. Rowboat Approach – This is the Self Effort path. If I am going to grow, it is up to me. Striving. My will. Try harder. Earn it. Rules. Row harder. It’s 100% up to me. Eventually, people who take this approach either feel like a failure or become a Pharisee.

2. Raft Approach – Let go and let God. It’s not up to me. If nothing happens, God didn’t do it. Float along. Don’t take any responsibility.

3. Windsurfer Approach – With a windsurfer, nothing happens if the wind doesn’t blow but the windsurfer is a real player in the process. The windsurfer reads the wind and knows how to lean into it and cooperate. He learns balance on the board and strengthens himself for this journey.

I think this third approach mirrors the way God intends for us to grow. The Holy Spirit is referred to as the wind. We cannot grow apart from cooperating with the wind of the Spirit. However, we can choose to lean into His work by meditating on Scripture, practice wise spiritual disciplines, saying YES to his sanctifying process and abiding in Him. There is a God role and a human responsibility role in our spiritual growth. Many verses affirm this balance. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me (Phil. 4:13). Work out your salvation with fear and trembling, for it is God who works in you (Phil. 1:12-13). For this purpose I labor, striving according to His power (Col.1:29). I have been crucified with Christ, it is no longer I who live but Christ lives in me (Gal. 2:20). We cannot live our life in Christ without dependence on the life of Christ.

Many have talent, ability and skill in their profession. But lack the virtue, steadfast focus lacking heart, quality, intensity, passion that lifts them past their ability.

Ask God for renewed passion and watch your skill rise past your ability, as you press into Him and His Spirit your heart is increased.

 Philippians 3:14”press toward the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus”

Press in constantly improving our God given skills seeking good training and mentorship.

  2 Timothy 2:15”Study to show yourself approved unto God, a workman that needs not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.”

God wants us skillful in His Word and life’s calling, improving our skills and talents to glorify Him. God will use you where you turned to Him in the field He planted you.

As you submit and do your best you will be amazed at the doors that will open and what God does through you in your faithfulness. Be diligent and ready, good things are coming your way.

God doesn’t work independently of our belief and will. Open your heart and spirit without reserve Jesus Christ will fill your life with power, truth and faith for victory.

Morning Line: Hope Excites!

Hope excites the heart with rejoicing. Think of a time of anticipation of good. There was joy and hope of things to come. It is impossible to have true hope without a degree of joy. If you lack joy, work on your hope, rejoicing will follow.

Dare to Care  

Don’t just pretend that you love others: really love them. Hate what is wrong. Stand on the side of the good.  Love each other with brotherly affection and take delight in honoring each other. Never be lazy in your work, but serve the Lord enthusiastically.

Be glad for all God is planning for you. Be patient in trouble, and prayerful always. When God’s children are in need, you be the one to help them out. And get into the habit of inviting guests home for dinner or, if they need lodging, for the night.

If someone mistreats you because you are a Christian, don’t curse him; pray that God will bless him.  When others are happy, be happy with them. If they are sad, share their sorrow. Work happily together. Don’t try to act big. Don’t try to get into the good graces of important people, but enjoy the company of ordinary folks. And don’t think you know it all!

 Never pay back evil for evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honest clear through. ¹⁸ Don’t quarrel with anyone. Be at peace with everyone, just as much as possible.

Dear friends, never avenge yourselves. Leave that to God, for he has said that he will repay those who deserve it. Don’t take the law into your own hands. Instead, feed your enemy if he is hungry. If he is thirsty give him something to drink and you will be “heaping coals of fire on his head.” In other words, he will feel ashamed of himself for what he has done to you. Morning Line:  Prepare to Launch

In the natural our possibility is limited, but in Jesus Christ letting His spirit guide and teach you the possibilities are limitless. Partner with Jesus and you can do more. Experiencing great faith with Jesus telling us where to cast your net beyond our ability and being amazed by what we can do in Him. Don’t be afraid to step into the water with Him. Jesus Christ said in Luke 5:4-6 (NRSVCE)  When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch.”  Simon answered, “Master, we have worked all night long but have caught nothing. Yet if you say so, I will let down the nets.”  When they had done this, they caught so many fish that their nets were beginning to break.”

Jesus has a full net of everything you need, but it’s in deep water not ankle deep water. Launch you boat of trust and faith in Him and prepare for what is about to happen,

You can then say with Jesus,” I and the Father are one” It is not I that do the works but “Father God” in me and through me do great things.

As your Sails are set to follow Jesus feel the wind and the Son and sun surround you, guiding you across your sea of life.
