Thought to Ponder: How to Know God’s Will
First let me thank Chap for allowing me to contribute to his ministry in a small way.
I am Pastor of a little country church in Texas. I was fortunate enough to have two wonderful mentors, not counting my father. The first was Dr. Irwin Freeman, a Bible Conference Speaker who was a Jewish believer, and who had four earned doctorates; and the second was Otis Fisher, a deacon in our church who had taught the Bible 50 years when I met him and who had taught all the Sunday School teachers at the largest church in our town, how to teach.
Today I want to talk with you about HOW TO KNOW GOD’S WILL. The interesting thing about this is that BOTH my mentors, in different decades and different places, taught me almost identically the same steps in seeking God’s will! I have combined their ideas and come up with the following method, which I think you will find very powerful in your life.
First make sure you are saved. Romans 10, 13 in a more literal Greek translation says, “Whoever desires to call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.” If you have that desire, it is because God has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light, by making you aware that His Son Jesus Christ was your ransom, and paid for every sin you have done or ever will do, and that you do not have to pay again! So, you’re saved by His blood, plus nothing.
Now to know God’s will for the next thing in your life, just pray and ask Jesus to hold your hand and become one with your spirit, for this is what it means to be spirit filled. While communing with God in this fashion, ask these four questions about the thing you seek God’s will on:
- Is this something that I want to do? (Psa. 37:4-5)
- Do I have the means to do it? (Pr. 16:9; Pr. 19:21; Isa 46.10; Js 4.14-15)
- Do I have peace in my heart about it? (Rom. 8.6; Rom. 15.13; Phil 4.6,7,9; Heb. 13:20-21; Js. 3.18)
- Is there anything about this that would contradict the Word of God? (Lk. 4.4; 8.15; 1 Thess. 2.13; Heb. 4.12; Psa. 1; Psa. 19.7-8; Psa. 119.1-5, 10, 32, 59, 60, 72, 97,98, 101-104, 105, 130-135; Isa. 5.24,25; Josh. 1.7,8)
You need a “yes” “yes” “yes” and “no” to the above questions.
When and if you get these answers, then do not hesitate to TAKE THE FIRST STEP toward accomplishing this thing. You will “step into God’s will” one step at a time.
Do not be surprised if along the way he changes your direction slightly from your original goals. He does this by closing doors and opening the right doors, and this is fantastic, because His perfect plan is always better than our original plan!
May the Lord bless you as you take bold moves into His will. Remember everything is HIS business, not ours. He just loves to work together with us!
