Thought about Labor Day

. Thoughts About Labor Day

By the grace of God, we have work to accomplish that He has placed in our path.

Colossians 3:23-24 (NIV) – “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving.”

Let us celebrate this Labor Day by giving thanks to God that we have work to do. While we are saved through our belief in Jesus Christ our savior, not our good works, working God’s plan is our eternal effort to show our gratitude.

John 14:12 (NIV) – “Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these because I am going to the Father.”

Labor Day celebrates the labor movement for workers’ rights in the 19th Century in this country. By 1894, the first Monday in September was a legal holiday in 30 states when President Grover Cleveland signed a bill to make Labor Day a federal holiday for federal workers. So, we get a day off to celebrate our right to work. Just what God asked us to do in Genesis when He ordained the Sabbath as an end-of-the-week day of rest.

Genesis 2:2 (NIV) – “By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work.”

Tomorrow, we celebrate and then most of us will be headed back to work on Tuesday. Those who are retired will most likely be looking for some work to do around the home, in the workshop, with their hobby(s), and in their sport of choice. Why do we continue to work at many things after retirement, because we enjoy working, especially to fulfill God’s plans.

Ecclesiastes 3:22 (NIV) – “So I saw that there is nothing better for a person than to enjoy their work because that is their lot. For who can bring them to see what will happen after them?”

Gracious God our Heavenly Father, thank You for giving us a plan to work for You, teach us to be good workers for the betterment of this world, and help us to help you to help others. We pray in Your Son’s precious name Jesus, Amen!
