The Vine The Branch The Fruit

Jesus ,I am the true Vine, and My Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in Me that does not bear fruit, He takes away; and every branch that continues to bear fruit, He [repeatedly] prunes, so that it will bear more fruit [even richer and finer fruit]. You are already clean because of the word which I have given you [the teachings which I have discussed with you]. Remain in Me, and I [will remain] in you. Just as no branch can bear fruit by itself without remaining in the vine, neither can you [bear fruit, producing evidence of your faith] unless you remain in Me. I am the Vine; you are the branches. The one who remains in Me and I in him bears much fruit, for [otherwise] apart from Me [that is, cut off from vital union with Me] you can do nothing. If anyone does not remain in Me, he is thrown out like a [broken off] branch, and withers and dies; and they gather such branches and throw them into the fire, and they are burned. If you remain in Me and My words remain in you [that is, if we are vitally united and My message lives in your heart], ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you. My Father is glorified and honored by this, when you bear much fruit, and prove yourselves to be My [true] disciples. I have loved you just as the Father has loved Me; remain in My love [and do not doubt My love for you].

If you keep My commandments and obey My teaching, you will remain in My love, just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and remain in His love. I have told you these things so that My joy and delight may be in you, and that your joy may be made full and complete and overflowing.

You have not chosen Me, but I have chosen you and I have appointed and placed and purposefully planted you, so that you would go and bear fruit and keep on bearing, and that your fruit will remain and be lasting, so that whatever you ask of the Father in My name [as My representative] He may give to you. This [is what] I command you: that you love and unselfishly seek the best for one another.

 “But when the Helper (Comforter, Advocate, Intercessor—Counselor, Strengthener, Standby) comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, that is the Spirit of Truth who comes from the Father, He will testify and bear witness about Me. But you will testify also and be My witnesses, because you have been with Me from the beginning. John 15:1-11, 16, 26

I’ve been reading about George Washington for some time now. He is revered in part because he had the courage to walk away from the Presidential power he surely could have maneuvered to keep. He practiced a peaceful transfer of power that was almost unheard of back in the day. King George III said that George Washington should be considered “the greatest man in the world” for relinquishing power. He bucked his adoring fans and those hitched to his political wagon to obey his inner compass. His significance, contentment and identity would come from God, his family and community not from the halls of power.

This set a precedent that has been a model for the world. There were many more things he modeled that informed our early national character and practices. He refused to wear his military uniform as President. He rejected honorific titles, instead preferring to be called “Mr. Washington”. He reminded people they were not to bow before him, that they were his peers and that they had a right to impeach him if he violated his office.

Translations: America does not have Kings. Washington promoted limited government and a skepticism of power-seekers. There should be no permanent political class. The government is of the people. Government depended on the consent of the governed. Remember our system is built with many “checks and balances” because Washington and the founders believed people and leaders were flawed and fallen and inclined to unchecked passions.

In his farewell address to the nation before his return to farming he warned his countrymen “in the most solemn manner” not to descend into partisan acrimony believing this was the way America could come apart. He was previewing Lincoln’s coming words that if America is going to die, it would not be by losing a military battle but by suicide (imploding from within).

George Washington knew all about the “Invisible Hand of God’s Providence. In his first Inaugural Address he said, “No People can be bound to acknowledge and adore the invisible hand, which conducts the affairs of men more than the people of the United States.” He knew God’s Providence personally. As a young 23 year old Colonel he had two horses shot out from under him and four musket balls pass through his coat. Indians testified they tried to kill him but he was bulletproof. God had a plan and made provision in the annals of our history.

I cannot help but think George Washington was intimately acquainted with Jesus’ teaching on leadership in Matthew 20:25-27, “Jesus called them together and said, “You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their high officials exercise authority over them. Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave —just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

Be Like Christ

Therefore if there is any encouragement and comfort in Christ [as there certainly is in abundance], if there is any consolation of love, if there is any fellowship [that we share] in the Spirit, if [there is] any [great depth of] affection and compassion, make my joy complete by being of the same mind, having the same love [toward one another], knit together in spirit, intent on one purpose [and living a life that reflects your faith and spreads the gospel—the good news regarding salvation through faith in Christ]. Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit [through factional motives, or strife], but with [an attitude of] humility [being neither arrogant nor self-righteous], regard others as more important than yourselves. Do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others. Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility],who, although He existed in the form and unchanging essence of God [as One with Him, possessing the fullness of all the divine attributes—the entire nature of deity], did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped or asserted [as if He did not already possess it, or was afraid of losing it]; but emptied Himself [without renouncing or diminishing His deity, but only temporarily giving up the outward expression of divine equality and His rightful dignity] by assuming the form of a bond-servant, and being made in the likeness of men [He became completely human but was without sin, being fully God and fully man]. After He was found in [terms of His] outward appearance as a man [for a divinely-appointed time], He humbled Himself [still further] by becoming obedient [to the Father] to the point of death, even death on a cross. For this reason also [because He obeyed and so completely humbled Himself], God has highly exalted Him and bestowed on Him the name which is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow [in submission], of those who are in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and that every tongue will confess and openly acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord (sovereign God), to the glory of God the Father. Morning Line: Dreams and Visions

The Lord’s Promise of His Spirit:

 “ I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy.
Your old men will dream dreams, and your young men will see visions.
…..I will pour out my Spirit even on servants—men and women alike.” Joel 2:27-29 (NLT)

What do you “see”? What’s in your future? What’s your “vision? “At birth God placed in your spirit a heart a bent, a dream that He wants to fulfill in you King David wrote:

Psalm 139:13 (NKJV) “For You formed my inward parts; You covered me in my mother’s womb. I will praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made”

Ask God to open you spirit to see your path. Trusting His spirit will show you the way. Pour your life into  knowing all God has for you through His unchanging Word, in faith believing you have what it says you can have, and you will live to “see” it fulfilled in your life. Being and doing more than you ever imagined!

A Finished Work

 Grace to you and peace [inner calm and spiritual well-being] from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I thank my God in every remembrance of you, always offering every prayer of mine with joy [and with specific requests] for all of you, [thanking God] for your participation and partnership [both your comforting fellowship and gracious contributions] in [advancing] the good news [regarding salvation] from the first day [you heard it] until now.

He‘s For You

For this reason [grasping the greatness of this plan by which Jews and Gentiles are joined together in Christ] I bow my knees [in reverence] before the Father [of our Lord Jesus Christ],  from whom every family in heaven and on earth derives its name [God—the first and ultimate Father].

Stand Firm

I’ve been meditating on the old expression, “NEW LEVELS, NEW DEVILS “. It’s easy to think we can grow to the point we won’t have issues anymore. What a set up for disappointment! I find that the battle grows more complex as you progress in your spiritual life and the enemy plots to take you out or at least neutralize you. The fight doesn’t go away on this side. Take heart my friends…you are not alone in the battle.

Morning Line: Saving Grace

Titus 2:11-14 (NKJV) ”For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works.”

God’s grace gives you the power to be an over-comer! His grace will

empower you to renounce the lusts of life that separate you from Him.

He will never leave you nor forsake you. God cannot love you any more

than He does at this moment. He just loves you.

Grace gives you the power to have self-control; to walk uprightly with

Him and to live a Godly life, His Word in you will overcome the battle

in your mind, your will and your emotions. His Grace has given you the

power to live in the now and expect a great future. Grab hold of His

grace and the blessed hope of His appearing. He has redeemed you to

live a life of abundance and not defeat.

Lift up your heart and seize the victory. Christ Jesus gave Himself to redeem

His Own special people. By the grace of God you can be one of His own.

Simply invite Him in.

“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life. “Indeed, God did not send the Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him. John 3:16-17
